Canna Indica

A medium sized species approx 200cm; green foliage, oblong shaped, spreading habit; triangular stems, coloured green; spikes of flowers are erect, self-coloured red, staminodes are long and narrow, edges regular, petals red, partial self-cleaning; fertile both ways, self-pollinating and also true to type, capsules globose; rhizomes are thick, up to 3 cm in diameter, coloured purple; tillering is prolific.

  

Canna's are perfect for adding a touch of the tropics to the garden. Found growing wild in South America, this plant has lush green foliage and bright red flowers, which appear from mid-summer until mid-autumn.

  

Either grow its rhizomes in containers or plant outside in a sunny spot. Bring indoors before the first frosts and overwinter the rhizomes in barely moist compost in a frost-free place. The following spring, pot up into fresh compost and gradually increase watering.

Cordyline are palm-like evergreen shrubs or tree-like perennials, with rosettes or tufts of linear or narrowly lance-shaped, leathery leaves, and terminal panicles of fragrant, cup-shaped flowers followed by small, spherical berries.

C. australis is a small evergreen tree with several stout branches arising from a single trunk. Leaves long, sword-shaped, in dense clusters at the branch tips. Large panicles of small, fragrant cream flowers.

Pruning Not usually pruned.   

Pests Can get scale insects and glasshouse red spider mite under glass.

Diseases Generally disease free.   

Soil Acid, Alkaline or Neutral. Moist but well-drained or well-drained. Chalk, Clay, Loam or Sand.

Aspect West or South facing. Sheltered.

Propagation Propagate by seed or suckers.
