 | | | | Festuca amethystina large blue fescue

Hardy Perennial
Foliage: Blue-green leaves.
Height: 20-30cm (8-12”)
Spread: 30-38cm (12-15”)
Position: Full Sun to partial shade
Aspect: All aspects. Exposed or Sheltered
Soil: Needs sharp drained soil
Festuca amethystina has the most striking combination of silvery-blue, tufted blades of foliage, with drooping, dark violet-tinged flower stems that will rise above the foliage in the first year if sown early enough.
It is a gem for a rock garden or containers; it is drought-proof once established. In the garden it's happiest in full sun and well-drained soils but can handle moist soils better than other species of Festuca.
The stiff thread-like blue foliage forms dense mounds, which look good grown for foliage interest amongst a wide variety of plants. Wonderful with rocks or as a small scale groundcover or edging plant. Best in full sun, but will tolerate some shade with moderate to regular water.
Plants develop their most intense colouration when kept dry in summer.
This beautiful selection rivals the best of the Festuca glauca cultivars - a small-scale ornamental grass which produces big-time results in the garden!
Aftercare:
Feed in spring like ordinary perennials, with a single dressing of a general fertiliser. Even without an annual feed, most grasses will put on a first-rate show. The more nitrogen grasses receive the greener and further they'll grow. This spreading habit is fine in a field, but in a garden they may become too lush and the flower quality may suffer.
Division:
Divide in March to April. It is relatively easy to propagate by division. Do this in spring, not autumn, as some newly divided plants may rot before they've developed a good root system.
Plant Uses:
Architectural, Cottage/Informal Garden, Drought Resistant, Flower Arranging, Flowers Borders and Beds, Low Maintenance or Mediterranean
Height Supplied Approx 4 - 6 inches

 | | | | Festuca glauca blue fescue grass

Hardy Perennial
Foliage: Blue-green leaves.
Height: 15cm (6”)
Spread: 15-22cm (6-9”)
Position: Full Sun to partial shade
Aspect: All aspects. Exposed or Sheltered
Soil: Needs sharp drained soil
Dainty diminutive Festuca glauca makes a tight mound of steely blue, needle-like blades and is one of the most tactile of the evergreen grasses. A new flush of blue-grey leaves appears by early spring and makes a fine foil for bright, low-growing bulbs. Planted as a specimen or in swathes across a high- summer garden, the colour is so unexpected it can't help but catch the eye.
Festuca glauca is not a showy specimen plant but in a minimalist scheme, against a backing of slate and red chippings, it adds texture, colour and interest. These fescues look terrific planted in a silver-blue swathe among taller grasses: weave them through dark carexes or plant them around the base of deschampsias, molinias or miscanthus.
Division:
Once the plant is established, divide in March to April. It is relatively easy to propagate by division. Do this in spring, not autumn, as some newly divided plants may rot before they've developed a good root system.
Plant Uses:
Architectural, Cottage/Informal Garden, Drought Resistant, Flower Arranging, Flowers Borders and Beds, Low Maintenance or Mediterranean.
Good companions
Small, sun-loving plants such as rock roses, thymes, smaller erodiums and single, low-growing pinks, mingle well with this grass on a scree or slope. Alternatively, dark-leaved sedums and the strappy-leaved black Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' provide a strong contrast to the clumps.
Dark-purple lavenders of every type, the large-leaved sage (Salvia officinalis), lamb's ears (Stachys byzantina) and the ponytail grass (Stipa tenuissima) make good companions in a sunny border of silvers.
For a striking spring partnership, team blue fescue with Crocus chrysantha 'Blue Pearl' and 'Ladykiller', pink and red species tulips or deep-blue scillas.
Height Supplied Approx 4 - 6 inches.

Architectural, Cottage/Informal Garden, Drought Resistant, Flower Arranging, Flowers Borders and Beds, Low Maintenance or Mediterranean.

 | | | | Pennisetum macrouruna tail feathers fountain grass

Tender Perennial, treat as an annual
Flowers: Graceful creamy-white bracts. June to frost.
Foliage: Clump-forming, Green in Summer
Height: 50-60cm (18-24”)
Spread: 50-60cm (18-24”)
Position: Full sun to partial shade.
Aspect: All aspects. Exposed or Sheltered
Soil: Light, moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil.

In perennial beds, Pennisetum can provide an upright form and help blend colours together. They provide a texture and colour contrast against evergreen shrubs in winter and a soft green background for blooming plants in summer.
Loved for its form and its bristly seed heads, fountain grass is one of the easiest grasses to grow and a staple of many gardens. The flowers last throughout summer and well into winter.
It is a fairly tender perennial often used as an annual and is hardy down to about -5*C, so if planted in a sheltered spot, may survive the winter, otherwise it can be grown in large pots and moved to a cool greenhouse over the winter months.
Aftercare:
Cut back old foliage in spring as new growth appears in the centres of plants.
Feed in summer with single dressing of a dilute general fertiliser. Even without an annual feed, most grasses will put on a first-rate show. The more nitrogen grasses receive the greener and further they'll grow. Do not over do it…their spreading habit is fine in a field, but in a garden they may become too lush and the flower quality may suffer.

Cream Falls can be dried and make interesting focal or secondary flowers in dried arrangements. To dry, cut the flower at the height of bloom and hang upside down in a cool, dark place to dry.

Flowers: Summer to Autumn
Height: 60cm (24”)
Spread: 30cm (12”)
Position: Full Sun to partial shade
Aspect: All aspects. Exposed or Sheltered
Soil: Needs sharp drained soil
The stipas include some of the most beautiful plants, and tenuissima makes a dense tuft of vertical growth spurting out of the ground, the base of the leaves packed tightly together in a clump. The top growth is nicely topped by the pale summer flowers and sways in the breeze, being slightly more eye-catching than the species parent. It can be grown in all kinds of imaginative ways, in rows with say Heliotropium in the alternating spaces, or encircling a standard (a shrub with a vertical bare leg, and all its growth on top). You can even grow 'Pony Tails' in long, sinuous lines through a border. It needs poor, free-draining ground because if the soil is too rich it tends to flop over.

Evergreen hardy perennial grass, grown for its distinctive grass like, black leaves. Racemes of lilac flowers in summer are followed by black fruits.9'' x 12''
Plant Type: grass/bamboo
Height (cm): 15-45
Flowers in july to sept
Soil Requirements: Well drained
Aspect Requirements: partial shade
Sunlight Requirements: Sun but will grow in Partial Shade
Colour Group: Blue/mauve
Foliage: spikey
"Black Grass" is a beautiful clump-forming evergreen perennial with grass-like leaves which are dark purple green, almost black. The flowers show up as dainty pearls, iridescent with the faintest blush of pink/violet followed by the black berries in late summer.
The plant is in fact a member of the lily family, but is nearly always included in with grasses. It is a slow growing plant but once it is established, it sends out "little babies" on runners.
As it is so dwarf, it is easily lost in a border and looks best grown on a rock garden or raised bed. Left undisturbed it slowly forms fair-sized colonies and looks good interplanted with small wandering perennials. It provides a brilliant contrast with most other plants.
It has been awarded the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the RHS
Aftercare:
Divide in March to May before their new growth period starts.
Healthy plants soon grow into a large clump as new fans of leaves develop around the older ones. These will eventually develop their own roots and can be easily detached from the parent plant.
Plant Uses:
Edging of Paths, Beds and Borders, Containers, Raised Beds / Alpine and Rock Gardens.
Looks good with:
A great many plants, but especially Other Grasses
Sold as off shoots/runners
Height Supplied Approx 4 - 6 inches.
